Second Blog Giveaway – DIY Breastmilk Keepsake Kit

28/06/2016 by Dr Donna Chow 7 Comments

If you have been active in the circle of mummies on facebook groups, you may have come across the recent fashion of making keepsakes from your very own breastmilk. It has been a trend for new age mothers to send their precious breast milk to faraway lands to make such jewelry - ranging from pendants, earrings, rings, beads and charms. And it costs quite a sum to make one of those. Some mothers in Singapore with entrepreneur spirit in them have also embarked on taking up such breast milk jewelry business, in the hope of cashing in on the bubble while it lasts. Such businesses usually started Click to read more

Pregnant and Fabulous Talk

Speaking at the event

I am delighted to be invited as a speaker for the Pregnant and Fabulous talk organised by Stemcord Singapore and Mount Alvernia Hospital. This event was held at York hotel last Saturday afternoon and was attended by prospective mummies and daddies who wanted to learn more about the journey of being pregnant and looking after their little one. We ended clinic early for that day to rush to the event, which was a seven minute drive away - we navigated our way there with the help of Google maps. Coincidentally, we were dressed in blue without prior arranging with each other. The Click to read more

Bringing baby to Club Med Bintan

Raise glasses

In my earlier post on Bringing Baby to Perth, I mentioned about baby's first trip to Club Med Bintan. We travelled there for a short holiday in February for Valentine's day weekend. The short getaway is just what we need - a  family trip to enjoy bonding with baby, eat great food and relax by the sea. Just in case if you haven't been to Club Med, it stands for Club Méditerranée and it's a French company which runs self contained resort in various exotic destinations around the world. You pay a fixed price per person and enjoy unlimited meals and drinks at the club. There are also Click to read more

Surviving 25 maid free days

Me versus all the housework chores

Recently, I sent my Indonesian helper back to her home country. So we are left with all the household chores to ourselves for 25 days until the next one arrives. The fear of not being able to cope with everything is very real - especially when we have a lived-in domestic helper for the past 1 year since the arrival of our baby. Read this recent ST Article on Indonesia plans to stop sending live in maids abroad. Hubby asked, "Why not hire a part time cleaner to do the work for the next 3 weeks?"  Yes, this consideration did occur to me but there were a few issues for this option. Bringing baby to Perth

Travelling for the first time

Perth is a very popular holiday destination for Singaporeans. We decided to bring baby to Perth for his first holiday by plane. His previous holiday was to Clubmed Bintan by sea and he loves it so much. Click to read the post here. Australia is an ideal destination for young families because it is easy to move around in rented cars and it is fairly near to Singapore; just a 5 hour plane ride away. Most tourist attractions closes at 4 pm or 4.30 pm; so that leaves you with more than half a day to chill and relax in the comfort of your apartment. Here is our short itinerary: Day 1 - Click to read more

Why I ditch blogger for wordpress

03/06/2016 by Dr Donna Chow Leave a Comment
Moving house is a lot of work

I have shifted home this month! It is not a physical house, but to redirect my domain name from blogger to wordpress. And it takes a lot of work to do it on my own. First, I need to purchase my hosting service, second to download wordpress and third to work on the template from scratch. You may not see a lot of physical changes from the old blogger website that I used to have but to me now, everything works like a charm. This is money well spent! Here are the reasons why I think moving on to wordpress makes more sense. 1 - Blogger gives me headache Literally. Yes. Everytime I log onto Click to read more

How should you treat pimple scars?

25/05/2016 by Dr Donna Chow Leave a Comment
Pimple scars

Pimple scars are one of the most common aesthetic complaints presented by young patients. Many of them have very bad pimples outbreak when they are much younger, and as a result of it, the skin heals with many scars. The most common scars are flat pigmented scars. They resemble red and brown patches on the face and are a result of post inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH). The same occurs when young children develops brown scars on their lower limbs when they get lots of mosquito bites. Most of these PIH scars can be treated with a combination of lightening creams, chemical peels and pigment Click to read more

Mother’s day talk at ONE°15 Marina Club

At the registration table

On Mother's day, I was invited to hold a sharing session with a group of ladies at Bar Nebula, ONE°15 Marina Club, Singapore. My topic for the day was on Skin Rejuvenation. On arrival, we were pleasantly surprised by the view the venue has to offer. Bar Nebula has full view of the row of private yachts docked by the waters. We were very impressed; I think it would be an ideal venue for a small birthday party or a wedding solemnisation ceremony.   Before the session, my colleague, Shirley and myself were enjoying a cup of coffee And the two of us with a close-up Click to read more

My First Blog Giveaway – Children Book Rack

13/05/2016 by Dr Donna Chow Leave a Comment
Children's book rack

It is very important to read to babies from an early age. Reading helps to stimulate early brain development and cultivates a passion for lifelong learning. This website shows that babies can understand words even before they learn to speak. In order to start my boy on reading, I bought quite a number of baby books - both fine print ones which I read to him before bedtime as well as large print ones which he can flip on his own. After accumulating so many books, I realise I need to display them nicely on a book rack so that he would find it appealing and would want to reach out for them. All Click to read more

DIY planning for my one year old birthday party

11/05/2016 by Dr Donna Chow 2 Comments
Blowing candles together

One year old parties happen to be a major event for most mummies. It is a milestone that calls for a celebration - be it big or small. Party planning is big business in the industry. Some planners charges from a few hundreds to a few thousands for the event, depending on how elaborate you want it to be. Initially I was very tempted to hire a party planner.  But the perfectionist monster got the better out of me.  I don't want to risk paying a hefty price tag and end up feeling disappointed if what they did is not what I desire. How difficult can it get doing your own party, right? Do Click to read more

My clarinet version of our NDP song by Kit Chan. Finally reunited with my clarinet after being apart for nearly a quarter of a century.
Pardon me for my rusty skills. Decided to pick it up again during the circuit breaker period.

Attached with the full lyrics:

Home - Kit Chan
Whenever I am feeling low
I look around me and I know
There's a place that will stay within me
Wherever I may choose to go
I will always recall the city
Know every street and shore
Sail down the river which brings us life
Winding through my Singapore
This is home truly, where I know I must be
Where my dreams wait for me, where the river always flows
This is home surely, as my senses tell me
This is where I won't be alone, for this is where I know it's home
When there are troubles to go through
We'll find a way to start anew
There is comfort in the knowledge
That home's about its people too
So we'll build our dreams together
Just like we've done before
Just like the river which brings us life
There'll always be Singapore
This is home truly, where I know I must be
Where my dreams wait for me, where the river always flows
This is home surely, as my senses tell me
This is where I won't be alone, for this is where I know it's home
This is home truly, where I know I must be
Where my dreams wait for me, where the river always flows
This is home surely, as my senses tell me
This is where I won't be alone, for this is where I know it's home
For this is where I know it's home
For this is where I know I'm home
